Passport Coffee & Tea has been roasting in Scottsdale since at least 1995, when a local catering business started buying from them and never stopped. That detail tells you most of what you need to know about the shop on East Gray Road: it is a serious bean operation, not a sit-and-stay cafe, and the people behind the counter expect to talk through what you brew with at home before they sell you anything. Espresso. Moka pot. Pour over. Cold brew. Each gets a different recommendation, and the staff know which is which.

The inventory is broader than most independent roasters bother with. Whole bean coffee across origins and roasts, available in one-pound and five-pound bags. Green beans for the small home-roasting crowd. A loose-leaf tea selection with the kind of depth you only find at shops that take the tea side seriously. And, unusually, single-serve coffee pods that are 100% compostable and processed locally in Scottsdale. If you have been looking for a way out of the aluminum-and-plastic pod cycle without giving up the Keurig, this is one of the few honest answers.

Free samples in-store help calibrate before you commit. They will grind for you if you do not own a grinder, though the staff will gently push the case for grinding at home. The subscription service is the move for anyone who finds a blend they like and wants it shipped without having to remember.

What the shop is not: a place to linger over a flat white. Customers do not write about atmosphere because the atmosphere is incidental. They write about the conversation at the counter and the bag they walked out with. Home brewers, pod converts, catering buyers, and wholesale accounts come here for the same reason: the staff treats coffee as a craft rather than a commodity, and the inventory backs them up.
