Perk N Beans lives inside Gateway Mall in Bismarck, which is the first surprising thing about it. Greg and Dee run it, the beans get roasted in-house, and the shop sits in the quieter, more eclectic stretch of the mall corridor. There's some seating spilling out into the corridor itself but the indoor footprint is small. This is a stop you make while you're already at the mall, not a destination cafe.

The Miel latte is the regular pick. Frappes move briskly in summer. If you don't know what you want, asking for a barista's choice on iced gets you a real answer rather than a generic sweet thing. They keep sugar-free drink options on the menu, which matters more in North Dakota than the coastal coffee press tends to acknowledge, and they stock locally made chocolate at the counter for the impulse purchase.

Greg and Dee are the operation. That's worth saying directly. The reason to come here over the chain options elsewhere in the mall is that the people who roasted your beans are the same people handing you the cup, and they're friendly about it without being performative. The shop is described as a fun little spot with a welcoming feel, which is exactly what a small mall coffee shop should be doing and is exactly what most of them fail at.

Whole bean is available if you want to take some home. The roast styles aren't pushing into experimental third-wave territory; this is solid daily coffee from people who care, not a single-origin lecture. The point of buying here over a grocery shelf is that the beans are fresher and the people behind them are right there to answer questions.

Not the place if you came to Bismarck looking for a strong sit-down cafe scene. The right place if you're running errands at Gateway and would rather have a coffee made by a person than the alternatives a few storefronts down.
