Beignets in Meridian. That's the pitch, and PJ's leans into it with a New Orleans theme that runs through the decor and the menu. The room is cozy and decorated like a slice of the Big Easy, with a patio outside if you want to eat your beignets and watch the parking lot.
It fills up. Often.
Order the beignets, obviously. They're the whole reason most people drive here, and they deliver on the promise as long as you're getting them fresh. Powdered sugar on your shirt, the texture right, the kind of fried dough that justifies a drive. The granitas are the other reason regulars show up, slushy and sweet and engineered for the Mississippi summer. The hot matcha latte is a competent pick if you're avoiding the sugar bomb that the rest of the menu skews toward.
This is a franchise location, and the in-store service has been inconsistent enough lately that it's worth flagging. The drive-thru is the more reliable lane if you're in a hurry or if you've been burned at the counter before. Wait times can stretch. Orders sometimes come out wrong. The frustration is real and the customers complaining about it are not making it up. The staff who are friendly are genuinely friendly, but the consistency is hit-or-miss depending on the shift.
For travelers who want a taste of NOLA coffee culture without the drive to Louisiana, PJ's does the job. The beignets are honest. The granitas are the right summer move. Just don't show up expecting perfection at the counter.
Know this going in: it's a chain. The decor leans theme-park New Orleans rather than the real thing. The beignets, though, are fried and powdered properly, and a fresh batch with a granita on the patio is a better Mississippi morning than most places this size are going to give you.
