Portland Coffee Roasters HQ on SE 7th lets customers watch the brewing through a window into the production area, which places this firmly on the working-roaster end of the cafe spectrum rather than the third-wave-bar end. The roaster also operates a location inside PDX airport, which is the version most travelers encounter first before discovering the HQ. The room is spacious and cozy, modern-rustic, the kind of quaint cafe behind an unassuming exterior that Portland produces a lot of and the rest of the country occasionally tries to copy. Comfortable chairs, dogs allowed, solid WiFi for settling in with a laptop. It can run a bit warm in the room itself, which is the only consistent complaint from regulars who otherwise love the place. The bar program is wide and worth working through over several visits. The hemp latte gets named again and again as the best customers have had, and that's the order if you want the shop's signature in your hand on the first visit. The vanilla latte with almond milk, the nitro chai, the cold brew, the peppermint matcha, and the candied cardamom latte fill out the rest of the lineup with enough range to keep regulars from getting bored. Latte art comes standard on every milk drink. The scones are remarkable. One customer called them the best in the United States, which is a heavy claim but one worth testing in person if you're a scone person and find yourself in Portland with an hour to spare. Tanager's Song Organic is the bagged blend most often recommended for taking home and brewing through the week. One honest flag on the bean side worth surfacing. The Steel dark roast got named by one regular as not as dark as billed, so don't order it expecting bold roast character if that's what you came for. Order something else from the dark side of the catalog. Historically not open weekends, so check the schedule before driving over on a Saturday. Best fit for Portland coffee fans who want to see the roasting process behind glass and laptop workers settling into a comfortable chair with a hemp latte and a scone for the afternoon.
