About

Richard has been roasting coffee for twelve years and you can watch him do it from the espresso bar. Red House Roasters on Mt Pleasant Avenue in Newark is part working warehouse and part cafe, with exposed brick, deep wood, and the kind of unhurried pace that lets you order a single origin and sit with it for an hour without anybody looking at the time.

The room is the draw for the regulars. One person calls it a grounded pause in the day. Another uses it for solo journaling. The light is soft, the materials are honest, and you can watch the beans being processed from the cafe side, which is the kind of detail that turns first-time visitors into recurring ones. The pace works against the in-and-out commuter run, which is honest enough to say out loud: if you need a coffee in two minutes on the way to the train, this is the wrong stop.

The Aponte Honey Processed from Narino, Colombia is the bag to ask about if processing methods interest you. Honey-process Colombian coffees sit between washed and natural, and the lot Red House is carrying is the kind of thing that rewards a slow drink. The Jersey Devil blend is the house anchor. The single-origin whole-bean lineup runs international and includes processed coffees that most New Jersey cafes don't bother stocking, which is part of what makes the place worth a drive.

Latte art at the bar is award-winning. At least one customer left with a seahorse poured into their cup, which is the kind of detail you remember six months later. The current promo gives you a free drink with a bag-of-beans purchase, which is the obvious play for first-timers who want to try the espresso and take something home. The economics on that promo make the buy-a-bag math easy enough that even casual visitors do it.

For Newark and North Jersey drinkers who want a quieter morning at a working roastery, with single-origin bags to talk through with the person who roasted them, Red House is the kind of address you build a Saturday around. Slow morning, journaling, long conversation, then a bag and a seahorse for the road.
