San Marco Coffee

San Marco Coffee is a literal hole in the wall on North Glenoaks in Burbank, and the size is the whole story. Three counter stools inside. A couple of small tables outside. A red roasting machine that runs every weekend on site, with the husband-and-wife owners at the controls turning out the next week's bags. The shop has been a Los Angeles regulars stop for years, and by the third visit the owners tend to remember your name and your standing order, which is rare in LA in general and rarer in Burbank specifically. The drink menu is short and direct. Dirty chai with real character is the order that customers cite by name. Black drip is the everyday cup. A vanilla latte you can dial in on sweetness handles the customer who wants something between austere and dessert. An iced caramel drink covers the warmer afternoons without overcomplicating the build. None of it is overengineered and all of it tastes like someone who has been doing this for a while made it, which is most of the appeal. The format excludes a lot of use cases. The room is too small for groups, the seating is not built for laptop sessions, the wifi is not the point, and there is no full-menu breakfast operation to anchor a longer visit. There is no third-wave pour-over bar to chase either, and customers who want one are going to find the menu thin. What you get instead is fresh-roasted beans, a quick cup served by the people who roasted what you are drinking, and a short conversation with two owners who care about that conversation more than the volume of customers moving through. Plenty of parking in the lot, which matters more in Burbank than it sounds like it should. The place has been a Los Angeles word-of-mouth recommendation for so long that locals tend to forget it is barely visible from the street.
