Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting Co. opened in 1978, before specialty coffee went mainstream. It roasts in small batches to bring out the subtleties of each origin.

When Fair Trade certification came to the U.S. in the late 1990s, the company embraced it. Co-founder Colleen Crosby, who had seen the hardships of South American coffee farmers firsthand, became a vocal advocate. It sells light, medium, dark, flavored and decaf coffees online and at its locations, with subscriptions and wholesale.
