The sweet potato muffin is the one to lead with. Then the sausage muffins, the sausage balls, and a blended drink called the Shaky Kangaroo that regulars order without thinking. Southbound Coffee Co. roasts its own beans on site in Columbus, Mississippi, and you can smell it from the door. That kind of detail tells you what you need to know about how seriously the team takes the coffee, and how long they've been doing it.
The space runs two levels. Downstairs is the counter and the bustle of order pickup. Upstairs is a loft full of couches and comfy chairs where students bury themselves for hours and group projects play out across the cushions. Live music turns up some nights, and otherwise the room runs quiet enough to study in, which is rare for a roastery cafe of this size. A drive-thru handles the grab-and-go crowd that doesn't want to park or come in.
Mississippi Morning is the house drip to try. The honey latte and the caramel macchiato handle the milk-drink rotation. The hibiscus lemonade is the warm-day refresher, and the blueberry muffin holds its own next to the sweet potato in the pastry case. The breakfast menu skews toward the sausage builds, which is a Southern shop knowing its customers.
This place has been around long enough that regulars have years on the place, the kind of staying power a small Southern roaster doesn't fake. Families show up. Kids are welcome. The loft handles solo work and group projects with about the same ease, and the drive-thru takes the pressure off the indoor seating when the upstairs is full. If you're driving through Columbus and want a real cup, this is the answer. If you live there, you already know the upstairs loft is the seat to claim, and the sweet potato muffin is what you order on the way up.
