Southdown Coffee - Huntington

Southdown's Huntington outpost sits in a small Wall Street footprint with house-made syrups and carefully pulled shots. The sister Oyster Bay location has its loyalists who will tell you that one is better, which is the kind of inter-shop rivalry that only exists when both places are doing the work and customers care enough to compare.

The room is cute, eclectic, quaint, a handful of small tables, and it fills up at peak. Finding a seat is a regular problem according to most regulars. Plan for grab-and-go or a short stand at the counter, because the alternative is hovering near a table waiting for someone to leave.

This is not a work spot. No wifi. No outlets. Parking is tight. Southdown wants you to come in, get a good cup, and leave. The whole setup is calibrated against the laptop crowd, and the shop is better for it. There are plenty of cafes on Long Island for working. This is one for drinking.

The latte is dialed. The house syrups carry a flavor program that most shops outsource to bottled product, and the difference shows up in the drink. The espresso tonic is the order to pull when the weather warms up, which it does early on the North Shore. Straight espresso if you want the clean read.

Vegan eaters get a chickpea sandwich worth ordering and a vegan banana chocolate chip muffin that holds together better than most. Breakfast sandwiches round out the food side without trying to be the centerpiece. The food is there to anchor the coffee.

Long Island regulars treat this like their neighborhood bar. Walk in, get your drink, talk to the person behind the counter, walk out. Repeat tomorrow. The format works for the format's reasons, and Southdown does not pretend otherwise. The Oyster Bay sister location is the alternative if the Wall Street seating problem is too much to deal with on a given visit, and most regulars rotate between the two.
