Steel Oak

Steel Oak is mostly a custom woodworking business, and the coffee is the side gig. Brandon and Andrea run Live Edge Home Goods out of Columbiana, Ohio, building hand-built furniture, floating shelves, mantles, bars, and dog bowl stands for customers who tend to keep coming back. Several of those customers also mention having bought coffee from them for years on the side, which is the giveaway that the operation runs on relationships rather than retail traffic.

The woodwork is what people primarily come for. Direct contact with Brandon and Andrea, well-packaged shipping, custom pieces ordered to spec. Once you're a customer for a shelf or a mantle, the coffee becomes part of the package, picked up alongside the woodwork or shipped with it.

Customers don't name specific coffees. The beans are good enough to keep longtime woodwork buyers coming back for them, but the operation is not built around a signature roast or a tasting menu. It's a maker business that also happens to sell coffee to people who already trust the makers.

Who it suits: customers ordering custom woodwork who want to pick up coffee from the same hands building their shelf, and anyone who values direct contact with the people making what they're buying. Not a walk-in cafe, not a high-volume roastery, and not the right place to start if coffee is the primary thing you're shopping for. Order a mantle. Add the coffee.
