Sur Coffee

Sur Coffee has a serious espresso program. They run Aeropress and pour-over options most coastal cafes do not bother with, which is the reason to come here rather than to one of San Clemente's dozen beach-town coffee stops with a standard espresso machine and not much else. The shop sits on El Camino Real with sidewalk seating in front and a back patio that doubles the room when the weather cooperates, which in San Clemente is most days. The decor leans coastal-minimalist with surfboards on the wall and a vintage motorcycle parked inside, which sounds like it could be a lot but reads as restrained in person. The cinnamon roll is the case item regulars name first, sometimes before they name a drink. On the drinks side, the peach cobbler iced latte and the honey almond milk latte are the seasonal-flavored orders that people return for. A cortado, an oat milk latte, a chocolate chip cookie if you want something simple. There are dog treats at the counter. Beer is on the menu too, in case the morning ran long and you want to slide into the afternoon without leaving the patio. The honest catch is the size. Indoor seating is tight, and on a busy weekend the room turns into a grab-and-go operation whether or not you wanted to sit. Parking gets challenging in the same window. If you come on a weekday morning, you find an artsy crowd with laptops and a real chance at a seat. If you come Saturday at 10, plan to take it to the patio or to go. Sur is for coffee-focused visitors first, dog walkers second, and remote workers third when the timing breaks their way. Get the Aeropress at least once. That is the order most beach-town cafes cannot pour, and Sur runs it with the kind of care that explains why the artsy crowd has stuck around through the busier weekends. The vintage motorcycle gets photographed more than the surfboards, which is the wrong way around but not by much.
