Taylor Lane sits inside The Barlow in Sebastopol, two floors of organic-coffee retail and cafe with an upstairs work loft, a downstairs patio, and a big outdoor awning that keeps the patio usable even in rain. The beans show up at Costco. That detail matters because it changes who walks in: half the room is people who already drink the coffee at home and wanted to see the source.
Long-time customers will tell you the place has slipped. Service has gotten less attentive under newer staff, and several regulars have flagged this in the same terms over the past year. The music has crept up in volume, sometimes aggressively so. The wifi technically exists but is unsecured and crawls once more than a handful of laptops connect. None of these are dealbreakers if you're stopping in for a drink. They are dealbreakers if you were planning to spend three hours on a video call.
Order the oat milk matcha latte. Or the lavender latte. The pour-over is the move if you want to taste what the roaster is doing rather than what the syrups are doing. The hot maple pecan latte has a winter following. One customer mentioned a mocha alongside a ham and egg croissant as a complete morning, which is the kind of pairing that suggests the food program isn't an afterthought.
The upstairs loft has long tables suitable for spreading out, which works well for casual hangouts and small group work even when the wifi doesn't. The downstairs patio is the better option in good weather and the only option if you've got a dog. Speaking of dogs: this is a dog-friendly stop, which fits Sebastopol generally and The Barlow specifically.
What you're getting here is a roomy, casual cafe with organic beans and a real outdoor space that doesn't get rained out. What you are not getting is the tight, attentive operation it might have been five years ago. Several regulars will tell you that to your face if you ask, and a few of the recent reviews say it more bluntly. Adjust your expectations and the place still has plenty going for it.
