Three coffees on bar, rotated every month. That's how The Crown runs its lineup, which is what you'd expect from the public tasting room of Royal Coffee, the importer that supplies a lot of the country's specialty roasters from this same downtown Oakland building. The cafe is the front-of-house science project. The eight-tap system and the mobile modular bar called Naaga (built by the Oakland artist Chambers Art & Design) are the props, and the menu is built around flights and named specialty drinks that take a few minutes to read.
Order the Leila if you want to understand the bar at full stretch: iced Americano with fig-ginger syrup, ume plum coconut whip, candied ginger. It's the kind of drink that sounds chaotic on paper and lands cleanly in the cup. The Rosina latte is the milky alternative. An espresso flight or a pour-over flight is the move if you came to taste rather than to drink, and pulling a 4oz espresso with milk on a rotating bean is the simplest way to see what's interesting on the lineup right now. Classes run on the side for the people who want to go deeper.
The room is design-forward, with counter heights varied to make the seating interesting and an outside parklet that takes the pressure off the cramped morning interior. Air conditioning works. No wifi, on purpose. Inside seating is tight in the mornings and is consistently called difficult for coworking by people who tried, which is the kind of constraint that filters the room down to people who came to taste coffee instead of camp.
This is the right stop for specialty-coffee enthusiasts who want a guided lineup of flights, bean education at the counter, and a designed room to spend an hour in. It's also one of the better dog patios in downtown Oakland. The baristas can talk through what's on bar without being precious about it, which is the Sprudge-grade detail that keeps the place credible. Meters only for parking, no easy lot, which is the last small cost of doing the trip.
