The Great North (Coffee Shop & Roastery)

The decaf at The Great North gets called the best in Portland by people who would not normally bother saying the word decaf out loud. It is roasted in-house, and the staff will bag it and grind it on request, which tells you what kind of operation this is. Tule, the house blend, runs the espresso program. The Northern Cappuccino is the regular order. Americanos are clean. Breakfast sandwiches turn up across the board with the vegetarian option doing real work, not playing backup. The veggie sandwich is the order one regular reaches for after a few weeks of trying everything else.

The space sits on NE Alberta with big windows and enough natural light to make it feel a size larger than it is. There are sidewalk tables out front under trees, which on the right kind of Portland afternoon is the whole point. Inside can get loud depending on who is in. Seasonal drinks rotate through the bar and give regulars something to ask about, which is the sign of a kitchen that is paying attention. Wifi is good and there are plugs around, so remote workers settle in for a long session without it being weird. Dogs on leash are welcome, and the Alberta-neighborhood crowd treats the place like an extension of the block. The Tule espresso pulls cleanly enough that the americano is worth ordering, not just the milk drinks.

The one gap is parking. No one writes about it, which usually means it is the kind of street parking situation you take your chances with. If you are driving in from outside the neighborhood, plan accordingly. If you live within walking distance, this is the kind of corner shop that gets folded into the morning routine without much thought. Order the Northern Cappuccino, ask them to bag a bit of the decaf for home, and stay long enough to see the light shift across the room. For a Portland roaster doing the unflashy work of an excellent decaf, the recognition is honest, and the cup justifies the trip.
