About

The Tilted Windmill is set in a building worth the trip on its own; an old antique bar dominates the dining room, and a patio sits in an alleyway out back that turns into one of the better seating options in Brenham on a mild afternoon. Staff like Charlie and Matthew get name-checked, the room is charming in the way old Texas buildings tend to be when someone's bothered to preserve the details, and the food side is what most customers come for.

Eggs Quixote is the standout. French toast, waffles with a crispy-fluffy texture that holds up to the syrup, biscuits and gravy. The pecan bourbon coffee is the signature drink and the one to order if you want a flavored coffee that tastes like the flavor it's named after rather than a generic syrup. The White Wolf is a white chocolate mocha with Irish cream and the order for anyone who came for dessert disguised as breakfast. Macchiato for the espresso purists. Quiche lorraine on the savory side. Jasmine tea is good but ask for it unsweetened, otherwise it arrives presweetened in a way that surprises customers who didn't know to ask.

The honest flag, which several customers have made independently: service quality varies sharply by visit, and reports of rude or short-tempered interactions with staff or with the chef are frequent enough to mention rather than dismiss as outliers. The room is beautiful, the food is real, the antique bar is the photograph everyone takes on the way out, and the experience on any given morning might be charming or might be tense depending on which shift you walk into and what kind of day the kitchen is having. Brunch visitors and tourists in Brenham who want a sit-down meal alongside coffee are the right audience, and the alleyway patio is the seating to ask for. Laptop workers should pick a different cafe; this isn't the room for that, and the menu and the layout were both built around the food side rather than around extended sit-and-work sessions.
