About

Wakeman runs out of an old fire station, with bay doors that open onto outdoor seating when the weather cooperates. The Catskill Mountains setting and the industrial bones do most of the visual work before anyone says anything. Inside there are couches, small tables, and free fast WiFi, which makes it the rare small-town cafe you can plant yourself in for a couple of hours without anyone giving you a look. The catch is the schedule. Wakeman is only open Friday through Sunday. Several regulars treat that as a personal grievance and they are not wrong to. If you're passing through on a Tuesday, you're out of luck and there is no workaround. The shop is closed and the bay doors are closed with it. Coffee gets called the best in the Catskills by people who would know, and the food side keeps pace. Fresh toasts, bagels, and a kitchen willing to riff a surprise drink for you if you ask for one. That kind of off-menu willingness is the tell that the staff is paying attention rather than reading off a checklist. A bird-themed seasonal special with spices and orange shows up on the board on rotation and is the order to make if you see it. Lattes carry the daily volume. The everything bagel with cream cheese is a standby for the regulars. The room has the comfortable scruff of a place that grew into its building rather than designing the building around itself. The industrial bones aren't a design choice. They're what was already there. One regular described it as a slice of cafe heaven in a small town, which sounds like the kind of line a small town needs and the kind of line a cafe earns rather than claims. It suits travelers coming off I-88 who want a real stop rather than a chain, weekend visitors looking for a place to work with friends, and anyone who values character in a cafe more than predictability. It does not suit anyone who needs weekday coffee. So plan around the weekend, plan around the bay doors being open, and plan to stay longer than you meant to.
