U3 Coffee has a rooftop. That alone earns it a different kind of attention in Forest Park, where the cafe sits on Madison Street next door to its in-house roastery and pulls drivers in from Oak Park and Berwyn. One self-described coffee nerd from the neighborhood calls it the best-tasting coffee in the OP/FP/Berwyn corridor. The roast leans fuller-bodied, chocolatey, nutty, not the bright acid-forward end of the spectrum. Indoors, the room is dark and warm, the kind of interior that earns its keep in Chicago winter. Staff and owners get named in regular write-ups, Simone in particular, and small details show up: a sticker take-one on the counter, whiteboard drawings for the day's specialty. The rooftop quiets down with music, which is the second reason regulars come, after the coffee. Order the Honey Oat Latte if you want the house signature. The Brew Ha Ha pairs iced brew with chai, which sounds wrong on paper and is not. The matcha gets the kind of praise that should make any matcha drinker pay attention. One regular called it the best they had ever had, and the creamy version is the one to ask for. Food works too: Asian sausage biscuit, Stringold's bagels, a spicy carrot muffin that does not pretend to be quiet, an Organica that holds up next to anything on the food side. The crowd is mixed. Parents with smaller kids, remote workers on the roof, regulars hanging on a couch with sketchpads and laptops. Parking is the catch. The lot is small, a dollar an hour, and tight enough that walking in is the easier move if you live close. If you do not live close, you came for the rooftop and the chocolate-leaning espresso anyway, and both deliver. The Chai Tea Latte is the rotation order for anyone who wants something other than coffee. Artists settle in on the comfy couch downstairs when the rooftop is too loud, with quiet music and the kind of corner that supports a sketchpad for an afternoon. The shop reads as a local default for the corridor rather than a destination, and that is the right frame for the visit.
