Gerardo is usually on site. That matters at Viva, because the Honduran heritage isn't a marketing line, it's the man's family country, and the roasting machines sitting in plain view aren't there for decoration. They run. The shop lives in a small house with blue shutters and a front porch across from a park on Madison Rd in Cincinnati, the kind of building that gets called charming so often the word stops meaning anything. Walk inside and the first thing you notice is that downstairs feels small. The seating is upstairs.

Upstairs is where regulars settle in. Outlets within reach, room to spread out, the kind of space people hold for hours on a Saturday morning when the line downstairs starts to back up onto the porch. Saturdays are the busy day to know about. Show up at ten and you'll wait. Show up at eight and the second floor is yours.

The coffee is the reason to come and the seasonal lattes have built their own following alongside it. The apricot cardamom is the one customers drive across town for. The hazelnut cappuccino holds together without collapsing into sweetener, which more shops fail at than admit. On a hot Cincinnati afternoon the iced lemon poppy seed matcha is the move. The food list stays tight on purpose. Avocado toast. Caprese toast. A gluten-free blueberry bread that regulars name when they're recommending the place to someone new.

This is a place for people who want to talk to a roaster about origin and process and not feel like they're holding up a line behind them. If you have a question about the Honduran lots, ask. The one practical catch is parking. Street only. On a busy Saturday in this part of Hyde Park that means circling, then walking a block or two. Plan for it and the rest of the visit takes care of itself.
