About

One customer summed Willoughby's up neatly: product excellence sitting next to aesthetic mediocrity. The coffee is the point. The Madison storefront sits on a brick-sidewalked downtown stretch worth walking even if you weren't coming for coffee, and the shop has been roasting in Connecticut since 1985, making it the state's first specialty roaster. The room is what it is, and Willoughby's doesn't seem interested in fighting that perception with a redesign.

The whole-bean selection comes with detailed roast descriptions on the labels, and the baristas know enough to talk you through them, which is the reason most people walk in instead of clicking through the website. The daily featured flavor rotates and gives the regulars a reason to ask what's on today. The raspberry crumb cake is the standout from the pastry case, the cookies hold their own, and the iced americano and latte are the steady choices on the drink side for anyone who didn't come specifically for a bean recommendation.

The interior is small and explicitly not a lounge; one customer made the point that this isn't where you settle in for hours, and the layout backs that up. Bean buyers who want to talk roast profiles with knowledgeable staff are the right audience, and the staff seems to enjoy that conversation rather than waiting through it. Big groups during a busy stretch will have a hard time finding seats. The 1985 founding date is worth keeping in mind: this is a roaster that predates most of the specialty-coffee vocabulary the rest of the industry uses now, and they've kept doing what they do without chasing every wave that came along after. For a serious bag of Connecticut-roasted coffee, a piece of crumb cake to eat on the walk back to the car, and a real conversation about roast profiles with someone who's been doing this for four decades, the small Madison storefront is worth the trip.
