The small-roaster coffee guide to New York City

New York has plenty of coffee. This list is narrower: cafes run by roasters who roast their own beans, pulled from our directory of independent roasters in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

They are grouped by neighborhood so you can stack a few into one walk. Hours change often and we do not have confirmed hours for most of these, so check before you head out.

FAQ

Questions about coffee in NYC

What makes these different from other NYC coffee shops?+

Every cafe here is run by a roaster that roasts its own coffee. We left out shops that only serve someone else’s beans.

Which neighborhood is best for a coffee crawl?+

North Brooklyn. Oslo and Hidden Grounds in Williamsburg are about a third of a mile apart, and SEY and Abeja in Bushwick are a few blocks from each other.

Are these cafes open every day?+

We do not have confirmed hours for most of these, and cafe hours change often. Check the roaster’s website or map listing before you go.

Can I buy their beans to take home or ship?+

Yes. Every roaster on this list sells beans online. Use the "Buy their beans" link on each pick.

Is there a good option in Manhattan?+

Partners in the West Village, Felix on Park Avenue South, and Solid State and Oren’s on the Upper West Side and Morningside Heights.

Picks come from our directory of independent roasters. Is something out of date? Each listing has a link to suggest an update.
